Keepsakes

If you know anything about me, you know I love to save literally everything. If it is even remotely important, I stash it somewhere and stumble upon it years later when I'm cleaning out my car/wallet/nightstand and smile and then continue holding on to it. Maybe it's a problem... who knows. My very first grown up temple recommend was no exception- I really wanted to keep it. I had worked hard for it and it had the signatures of two men who mean a lot to me. Plus it's a cool keepsake for my wedding album. But, the policy exists that when you are issued a new temple recommend, the old one is turned into your stake president and destroyed. I'm sure it's for security purposes, but I hoped they would bend the rules for me just this once.
A couple months ago I went to get a new recommend because I wanted it to be from my current stake and have my new name on it. As I sat and waited for one of the members of the stake presidency, I thought about how I would go about asking if I could keep my old recommend. I figured it was a dumb idea because I knew the rule, but I just wanted it so bad. Then I realized that it doesn't matter if I keep my first recommend because I'm always going to have one. Sure, they might change the design of the paper or make them a different size, but I'm always going to have a temple recommend. I never have to be without it and I can hold it dear to me.
I went in to my interview and handed my old recommend to President Peterson. I mumbled "I sure wish I could keep it..." After taking a long look at it he said, "I sure wish I could let you keep it." And then I said "It's okay, because I know I'll always have one." It felt good. It feels good knowing I'm worthy to carry around my recommend and be in the House of the Lord.
I had the opportunity to go through the temple for the very first time a year ago yesterday. It was a sweet day and I'm so grateful for that experience and the blessing that have come from that decision. I'm grateful for Scott for sticking by my side and helping me prepare for the most important thing in my whole life. I'm grateful for President Chappell for pushing me and making me work so hard to get my first recommend. It truly made a difference. I love the temple and I am so grateful to be surrounded by so many beautiful castles.

If I had seen this picture five (or even two!) years ago I wouldn't have believed it.
Seriously, #lifegoals

I Love My Mom

Since Mother's Day is Sunday I wanted (like the rest of the world) to share why my mom is an awesome mom and why she's the best mom on the planet. Because my mom really is the best mom on the planet.
For almost thirty years my mom has been a mother. She has taken care of four children and sent three off into adulthood so far. Since moving out three months ago, I've appreciated my mom so much more than ever before. Not because I learned that I can't live without my mom, but that I can
Every day I am thankful that my mom taught me how to cook, clean, and most importantly shop. She taught me the importance of making my bed daily. I never once made it a habit at home, but now that I have my own house, I see why it's important. I make our bed every day and it makes the whole house seem happier. Scott and I eat dinner together every night because she set that example for me. I love making her recipes and remembering her tips and tricks when I cook in my own kitchen. And I can't forget to be thankful she taught me how to live on a budget. Making a shopping list and sicking to it helps me not go crazy at the store. I love her for that. I wouldn't be able to do it without her.
My mom has so much faith. I can't even begin to write all the stories of times she has prayed and been helped because of her faith. I used to see her wake up early to read scriptures or conference talks before going to work. I always wondered how she stayed so happy and positive throughout the stresses of life and I didn't understand it until I followed her example. Taking time for spiritual things helps keep everything in perspective.
My mom is the hardest working mother I know. Ever since I was little she went to work every day and never complained about it. She went from being a kindergarten teacher to the headmaster of Challenger's Salt Lake campus. I admire her for standing out and moving up and proving to me that hard work will pay off.
My mom is the sweetest, most loving person. When you think of a "mom" you think of my mom. She's the one that comes into your room at night when you have bad dreams. She's the one who lets you cry about people who are mean. She's the one who will always make you feel better when you are sick. I've had friends tell me that my mom is really nice. My mom IS really nice. You can always find her doing something good for someone else. She's just that kind of person.
My mom has always made sure that my siblings and I have everything we've ever needed. She loves and supports us in everything we do. I will never forget when my mom was sitting in the pouring rain to watch one of my marching band competitions. Even though she had seen our show a million times, she wouldn't miss a performance. I appreciate her so much for always building me up.
I appreciate her for giving us a good father. I love my dad! As great as my mom is, her and my dad as a team is even better. She always knew the kind of man she wanted to marry and have a family with. She stuck to her standards and gave us a wonderful dad.
I just love my mom. I could go on and on about her. I hope one day I can be as great of a mother as she is! I'm glad that my mom has taught me everything I've needed to grow up and move out and be a good wife for Scott. She turns every minute into a teaching lesson. She just wants to know she's doing all she can to make sure her children turn out to be good people.
Even though I live on my own now, I still love to go back home and see my mom. I still have questions and concerns about life and she's always there with an answer. I'm glad that even though I can live without my mom, I don't have to. Because no matter what, she will always be my mom and she will always have something to teach me.

I love you, mom! Thanks for everything you do!

And if you feel like crying, go watch this.
Seriously. It's amazing.

Valentine's Day

Since Scott is literally the most wonderful man on the Earth, he still wanted to celebrate Valentine's Day even though we were getting married the next morning.
We had planned to go to the temple at 10 and spend some time together before I had to go do last minute things. He came over while I was still getting ready and surprised me with peach roses, a stuffed puppy, and a sweet card that said "to my wife". I laughed a little because I almost got him a card that said "to my husband". I got all my things together and we left for the Jordan River Temple.
There was a wedding going on and I was really excited to see all the family waiting in the lobby. I couldn't wait for our turn! We got dressed and just waited for the session to start.
I love being in the temple because it's so calm and quiet. I love just sitting and forgetting about everything else going on. It was nice to go to the temple again and be able to pay attention and understand better than the first time. It was nice to go with just Scott and follow our own agenda. It was so wonderful and so peaceful. It was the perfect pre wedding Valentine's date :)
We asked one of the workers if we could go see the sealing room we were going to be married in. It was absolutely beautiful and I was so excited! Eventually we left and went to pick up the puffy underskirt thing for my dress. We went to Golden Corral and indulged on mac and cheese and chocolate strawberries. We talked and laughed and enjoyed our date. He helped me run a few more errands and then we went home. I was so sad when I had to leave him. I couldn't wait until the weekend so we could spend more time together.
I just love my Scotty. He's the most perfect man. :)

Best Friends, Forever

We spent the night before putting together a playlist for dancing and talking and laughing together.
At 11:49 we said goodbye for the last time.
I didn't sleep much.
I got up at 7, tired as can be.
It took me 40 minutes to shower and shave.
Never before have I taken so much time on my knees.
Threw on my makeup, almost cried.
Went to my hair appointment, almost cried.
Came home and fixed my disaster of a face.
Put on my black dress and mom told me I was beautiful.
Loaded up everything and checked 4x.

Only temple in the valley open = nowhere to park.
Almost cried again.
Couldn't find mom, couldn't find Scott.
Started to panic.
Finally got everyone together.
Hugged my boy and told him he looked so good.
He did look so good.

Put on my dress and just stared.
Mom and grandma oohed and aahed.
Came out and saw his face drop.
*finally*
Said goodbye to our parents and went up the elevator.
Temple worker said the sweetest words,
"We aren't going to separate you any more."
Sat and waited with my sweetheart with the calmest, most peaceful feeling.
Almost cried again when we walked in and saw all of our family and friends.
Heard the most beautiful blessings and promises, ever.
Filled with joy.
Hugged everyone, my brother was my favorite.

Came out of the temple to so many happy faces.
Pictures, pictures, pictures.
Windy and kind of cold,
but at least it wasn't snowing.
Had a moment of realization that we were actually finally married and screamed a little.
Drove to reception center for lunch.

Delicious food and happy family.
Bagpipers. SO COOL.
Random advice that I don't remember.
Elise's parents taking pictures to send to her.
Being so happy every time because I knew it was like she was there.
Setting up for reception.
Making out in the groom's room.
Getting ready for pictures.
Photo sesh with our mute photographer.
Props to her for being the ultimate trooper.
And Austin for being her voice ;)

Packed reception. Worried about brownies.
Saying hi and hugging everyone.
Felt like a princess.
I lost a bet I thought for sure I'd win.
Cake, bouquet, garter, dances.
HE PULLED IT OFF WITH HIS TEETH AND I COULD NOT STOP LAUGHING.
Time to go change and leave.
Bubbles and goodbyes.
Oreos and balloons everywhere.
Had to go through the car wash twice so we could see out the windows.
Good talk with Scotty, actually cried.

Little America check in.
Stayed in the tower on the 12th floor.
Rose pedals on the bed, sparkling cider on ice, and chocolates & berries.
It was adorable and so big and so beautiful and it felt like heaven.
Sister's snack basket that saved our lives.

It was the best ending to the best day.
I loved falling asleep next to Scott and not having to wake up and go home.
I loved that we were ALLOWED to be alone.
That no one was going to call us and bug us and ask where we were.
It was magical.
Being married to Scott is magical.
Our wedding day was perfect.
I wish we could do it again.
:)

We really are best friends, forever.

The Happiest Place on Earth

Saturday was one of the best, sweetest, most wonderful days of my life.
Why?
Because I got to go to the happiest place on Earth.

I never want to forget the way I felt in the temple. I never want to forget how sweet of an experience that was. I never want to forget how good it felt to be surrounded by family members and my sweetheart in such a wonderful place. I never want to forget how calm and peaceful I felt. I never want to forget the way Scott looked and me and smiled and told me how proud he was of me.

I'm so grateful to have the temple in my life, even more now than ever before! I can't express how happy I am to be surrounded by so many temples. It's so wonderful to know that I can always go back. It's not just a once in a lifetime thing, it can be a part of you all the time! That happy and peaceful feeling lasts even after you leave. You get to take a part of the temple with you and cherish it every day.
We have such a wonderful Heavenly Father who has blessed us with such an amazing place to go and be closer to him- to come closer to our family members and to ourselves. I can't describe how great it is to go somewhere and be free from all cares. I never once thought of the homework that needed doing or the price of rent and the amount of my paychecks. I never once worried about what was happening on Twitter or what my friends were doing. All I cared about is where I was and what I was doing. I absolutely loved it. And I absolutely can't wait to go back! And I'm even more thankful that next time I go, I get to marry my best friend :)

It's been a long, difficult journey to the temple. But, I know that the fight was worth it because there's only one way to happiness.

Having a Cool Fiancé is Nice

Scott is literally the most popular, friendly, amazing guy ever. Which is nice. Because then we get to do awesome stuff. :)

A couple weeks before Christmas we were given the opportunity to go to the MoTab Christmas Concert on Sunday morning at the Conference Center. This production is so big and amazing that they perform it several times so more people can attend. Since Scott knows people who know people, we got tickets for Sunday morning- That's the session they put on TV :) I felt so lucky. I've always wanted to go! I love music, Christmas, and the Gospel, so it was perfect!
We woke up bright and early and drove to Salt Lake. We probably should have left a little bit brighter and earlier because there was literally nowhere to park. Again, Scott is really cool so he knew about this church nearby that we could park at. We finally made our way down the crowded street to the church. We were literally running towards the Conference Center because we were late. I was so worried they were gonna lock the doors and not let us in! Anyway, there were still mobs of people outside so we just went along and found the door we were assigned to.
Now, here's the part where I am REALLY grateful my fiancĂ© is so cool... We get inside and show some ushers our tickets. The man said, "Oh, VIP is this way." I was like WHHHHAAAT? We went where he told us to and we found out we were sitting on the lower level. I was so excited! I've never been cool enough for that! We kept walking like 5 feet, showing our tickets, and being told to keep going. We were getting closer and closer to the stage and we just kept looking at each other in shock. Finally we found our seats. And they were most definitely on the 12th row. We sat by the family in his ward that gave us the tickets. Their mother is in the bell choir so she was given some tickets to give to people. AND LET ME TELL YOU, THEY GAVE THAT WOMAN SOME DANG GOOD TICKETS. It was amazing. The entire concert was 2 hours long. We were SO CLOSE to the prophet. AND we got to be part of some clapping and laughing sound bytes. ;) It was truly the most amazing thing I've ever witnessed. I was beaming the whole time. I wouldn't have traded that experience for anything!

All the performers after the finale.
No zoom. :)

And of course, the cute boy ;)

And last night, another couple from his ward took us out to dinner as a pre-wedding present. We went to The Roof and it was amazing. Seriously. Amazing. I ate SO MUCH FOOD. I want to go back literally right now. We had such a fun evening and talked and laughed about engaged/newlywed/20yearsofmarriage life :) I love the Platts. I hope one day the Scott/Kara Simpson family can be as awesome as they are! We had an incredible view of the Salt Lake Temple and the Utah Sate Capitol. Anyone who says Utah isn't awesome should just leave. Cause we have some pretty cool stuff! I'm just so thankful to be engaged to someone that always has a new experience for me waiting around every corner. He helps me get up and out and it makes me so happy. I'm so thankful for all the fun times we've had together these last 8 months. I can't wait for the rest of our lives :)

Don't forget to marry someone awesome. :)

Terrible Twos

I recently (okay like two months ago) got called to the nursery.
I was shocked.
Like, if I had woken up with my head sewn to the carpet I wouldn't have been more surprised than I was when Brother Gilbert extended the calling to me.
I thought he wanted to talk to me about temple prep or something.
NOPE.

I was ultra sad that I A) wouldn't be able to prepare for marriage by the things learned in Relief Society B) wouldn't be able to do church swaps with Scotty anymore C) wouldn't be able to spend Elise's last few months home sitting by her at church D) wouldn't be getting Brother Eveland's delicious Sunday school treats anymore and E) was gonna get super sick from all the kids.

I whined to Scott about it and he told me everything would be fine. He came to my setting apart and told me it would be good for me to spend time with children. Because I really never have.
I was super excited for a new adventure though. And I absolutely loved the sisters I was going to serve with.
After I got set apart I knew there was no going back and I headed off to nursery my first week.

Oh. My. Gosh.

It took those 8 kids .3 seconds to steal my heart.
I cried when some of them graduated to sunbeams last week.
Literally.
There's this one little girl called Abbie and I swear she's the most perfect thing.
She's so cute. She smiles and it melts my heart.
She brings me books and puzzles and toys and just smiles.
She doesn't talk much but she knows sign language.
SIGN LANGUAGE.
SHE LITERALLY CAN'T DO A FOUR PIECE PUZZLE BUT SHE KNOWS SIGN LANGUAGE.
I can't handle it.
All the kids are so adorable.
They range from 18 months to almost 4 years, depending on their birthdays.
I love being around their sweet selves.
I appreciate my calling so much.
I don't even wanna know what it's gonna be like when I move and have to be released.
I just love those children.
We truly are children of God.

A House of God

Lots of talk of temples today.
I loved it.

I just love the temple. I love hearing the greeter say "welcome to the temple" when you walk inside. I love the sweet ladies that give you clothes to change in to. I love the confirmation rooms with the glass windows. I love the pictures in the hallway where you wait. I love the warm water in the font. I love reading the names and birth dates of the people on the screen. And on really good days, you can feel the joy of the people whose work is being done. There is nothing more rewarding than that.

It's THAT feeling that makes it all worth it. All of the struggles with temptations. The extra hour of school spent in an institute class. The terrifying phone calls to make visiting teaching appointments. The hard talks with the bishop. The long church meetings. The rolling out of bed early in the morning to read scriptures. The constant battle of being "in the world but not of the world". The need to dress modestly in a society that makes it difficult... All of it. All of the "hard things" we have been asked to do. All of the commandments we have been asked to keep. All of the duties we have been asked to fulfill. It's all worth it as soon as you feel the love of your Heavenly Father. When life is crappy, you can literally feel him put his arms around you and tell you it's gonna be okay. That it's worth the fight. That being at the temple is important and being worthy to be there is even more important.

Today I realized (again) that living the Gospel can be hard sometimes but it's definitely worth it. There is absolutely nothing in this world that is worth giving up a temple recommend for. I believe that having an invitation to the House of God in your name for your use only is the greatest thing you can have in your possession. Because that's where I want to be. And that's where I'm going to be.

I love Oquirrh Mountian more and more every time I go there.
And I go there often.
Not as much as I used to, but still a lot.
I love to just sit in the parking lot.
It's peaceful and quiet.
Sometimes I walk around and take pictures.
Other times I just stay in my car.
But every time I go, I leave feeling refreshed.
Like I can take on the world again.

What The March?

So, it's March.
March.
As in, the third month of the year.
MARCH
Where the heck did February go!?

Despite the shock I'm in right now, I'm quite pleased that winter is almost over and walking around the U isn't going to be like death anymore! :)
Hopefully.
You never know with Utah.
It's probably gonna snow tomorrow just because I said that.
Anyway, here are a few things that have been going on!

Elise and I served as subs in nursery today.
hahahahahahahahahahaha
I'm pretty sure I laughed for almost half of it.
The other half I was soaking up the spirit that those kids give off.
It's incredible.
And the Church is true.

Jamba is getting busier!
Shifts are a lot more fun when there are more people working and we are making a lot of money.
Hiring for summer will be starting soon.
I'm nervous to train the new kids...
But, my trainers were champs and they helped me become the fab employee that I am today ;)
So hopefully I can be as awesome as they were.
I just can't believe that I've been working there for almost a year.
The time flew by.
I've accomplished so much since then.
Also, I'm nervous for some of the old staff to come back...
I already know how hard it is to be in charge of your friends.
I don't know if I'm up for that task again...
We'll see.

School is absolutely terrifying.
I'm not even worried about grades anymore, just passing.
I've never ever felt like that before.
My classes are just so hard for me and I know they are only going to get worse.
Every day I wake up hoping that things will get better...
they don't.
But I know how important education is and I am determined to fight through this!

I have been practicing so much self-control!
I haven't been shopping since the semiannual sale at VS.
Which is totally incredible.
I guess having to give my parents every paycheck I earn has made me not want to spend any money.
Although, I did break down yesterday and buy some nail polish.
But that's it!

Speaking of giving my parents all my money,
I finally paid off my trip!
This summer my family and I are going on a cruise to Canada/New England.
It ends in Boston.
Which means....
RED SOX vs YANKEES AT FENWAY PARK.
FENWAY PARK.
I'm. Going. To. Fenway.
I want to cry every single time I think about it.
I'm so excited going to explode from all the blissful feelings I have.
I've been wanting to do this since I was a tiny little 6th grader.
I can't even hold it in anymore.
I want to go scream it to the whole world and then dance around for hours.
But for now, happy webcam pictures will have to do.
 :)

Happy midterms! May the odds be ever in your favor!

Thankful Thursday Part 1

(Title credit goes to Ashley :))
On Facebook I've been posting what I'm thankful for every day.
And on here I would like to elaborate on those things a little bit for the next couple Thursdays.
:)

November 1st- TRAX
I ride the train to school every day and it is honestly so nice! I love not having to deal with driving or traffic! There is a stop right by my house and it only takes a few minutes to get there. I know I'm always going to be on time to school and it's nice to have a place to do homework and relax. I usually end up sleeping (if I'm not chatting with the person sitting next to me) and it rocks. It's the best way to kill an hour because I think we can all agree life is tiring and naps are wonderful :) Anyway I am just very thankful for my free UTA pass so that I can get to school every day!

My favorite seat :)

November 2nd- My Parents
Now, there are many reasons I am thankful for my parents but this particular day my dad was getting surgery and so my mom took work off to take him to the hospital/take care of him. I know that's kind of expected of your spouse but I thought it was really sweet how caring my mom was. My whole family was a little nervous that things weren't going to work out and we were all very thankful that he's okay now. I just really love my parents and appreciate how much they do for me. They always make sure I have everything I need :)

Look how cute they are :)

November 3rd- My job and the ability to work
It was a Saturday and I had to go in from 9:30 to 7:30. It was a long day and I knew it was going to be hard. Plus, who wants to spend their entire weekend at work? (I had also worked Friday from 3:30 to 10:45) But then I thought about how many people don't have the opportunity to work or can't get a job for whatever reason. I am thankful that I am able to work and love my job so much. Jamba is the greatest <3

Slacking baked goods is def my favorite.
I'm the best at it ;)

I love this quote!
My aunt has it hanging by her front door in her house.
Such a good reminder :)

November 4th- Blogging
I posted 3 times that day. I love being able to write down my thoughts, feelings, and memories. It totally rocks! Memories mean the world to me and I am so thankful for my blog. I don't post a lot but I know one day I will be thankful for the things I have written.

November 5th- My writing teacher
Probably seems weird but I love my writing class. It's hard and a lot of work but I honestly do love it. My teacher is incredible. She's a grad student so she GETS us. She's not a stuck-up "Dr. Wetlaufer" she's simply "Ms Wetlaufer". Her motto is, "There is no wrong when you are learning." I love that. She doesn't demand perfection from us because she knows she's there to TEACH us. When we got our narrative papers back I noticed that I got an A on it and I was so happy! I love being good at something, finally! But, not everyone did so well. That particular day she told us that she was canceling our plans for the day and was going to give us a lesson on commas because there were so many people who made simple comma mistakes in their papers. She got kind of mad but it was so nice to have her there to work with us and get us to understand a simple English concept. She just rocks. I love how helpful and realistic she is. It's nice to have a teacher like that for my first semester of school.

I was SO. HAPPY.

November 6th- America and having the right to vote
As you know, I voted early last week but Tuesday was actual election day. I was overcome with gratitude for being an American citizen and having the right to voice my opinion in society. Even though my vote probably didn't matter, I was thankful to even have the chance to do so. America rocks, let's be honest. The values this nation was established on are totally what I believe in. Even though we have kind of strayed from those values over the past 200 years, this is still a great place to live. We have so many opportunities for success here. I have a deep love for America and I am so thankful to be a citizen.

November 7th- A beautiful fall
(p.s. people, you don't capitalize seasons. Stop capitalizing seasons. They are not proper nouns.)
(Sorry, just a pet peeve of mine...)
Anyway, the weather has been so nice this fall! (Yes, I know it's going to snow tomorrow. But still. It has BEEN lovely) The leaves have been gorgeous and the weather has been awesome for the most part. I love walking around campus with huge trees that leave crunchy leaves everywhere. I love being able to wear cute fall outfits without having to cover up with a coat. I love wearing boots and not getting them wet! It's awesome! I'm really going to miss this fall but I'm thankful we had it. :)

Seriously. Look at those leaves!

November 8th- Missionaries
I have SO MANY friends who are serving right now and are about to leave. I am so very proud of them. I don't think I could do it. I couldn't leave my family and go somewhere I've never heard of, eat weird foods, be with people I don't know all day, talk to strangers, live out of a suitcase, be on my best behavior all the time.... the list goes on and on. I admire these kids so much for preparing to serve the Lord for two years (or 18 months for my sistas). It's incredible to have such good examples around me all the time. Right now is such an important time to share the Gospel with people. All the generations before us were told to "be in the world, not of the world" and we are being told to go into the world and pull people out of it. It's so scary and so awesome at the same time. I am thankful to have the Gospel in my life and to have that anchor holding me in place. Life can be hard, we all know that. Times can get tough, we all know that. Temptations are stronger than ever, we definitely all know that. Making decisions is so much easier when you've already got them made. This is the time when you've got to rely on your testimony to pull you through. I just feel so blessed to know the truth. :)

Well, that was fun! I love thinking of something to be thankful for every day. It makes it so much more meaningful. Even if they are just little things, you've got to always be thankful for something. It makes for a happier life for sure!

It's Not About You

When it comes to service, you've got to remember that.
It's not about you.
When I got called to serve on Seminary Council I was ECSTATIC.
I looked up to the SemCo so much!
I wanted so badly to be in their position and be able to serve in such a neat calling.
When the Lord decided that he needed me to serve, I happily accepted.
But, after I was set apart I was reminded of something.
It's not about you. Period.
I was called to serve the students of Copper Hills Seminary, not to put on a flashy show of awesomeness.

At our first meeting Brother Waite gave us a talk by Spencer W. Kimball called Jesus: The Perfect Leader. (look it up, it's really good!) He told us to go home, study the talk, and come back with ideas on how we could be better leaders. Talk about the most humbling experience of a lifetime. That calling did so much for me. I have never done so much underground service in my life.
Many people don't understand just how much work goes into a calling like that. I had to wake up at 5:30 every Friday in order to make it to meetings on time. I stayed after school many times cutting papers, praying for students, helping teachers, making videos, cleaning... everything you could ever think of. And know one knew I was doing it. It was kind of awesome! I loved being able to help people out without anyone knowing. It definitely changed my views on service. It does not always have to be out in the open. In fact, it's better if it isn't!
The kids I served with were absolutely incredible. I know that the 12 of us were called to work together because everyone's strengths were matched with someone else's weakness and when we all put our heads together, we were unstoppable. When we had big decisions to make we would go to the temple together and pray about it until we were all unanimous. We always made sure to think about what was best for the students, even if that meant a lot of work for us.
I never heard one word of complaint from anyone. Everyone was always so willing to help out and I loved that. I loved being in such a great environment where I could just be lifted up by their great examples. I didn't have to worry about being made fun of or judged. They were the sweetest, most caring kids ever. We all built good friendships as we went through a lot of hard times together.
One of the hardest things that we had to do (well, for me at least) was helping out with Jaxen Henderson's funeral. Her mother requested that we help set up chairs at the church and Brother Waite told us that it would be nice if we went to the viewing together. Now, I don't do well with stuff like that. It just scares me and makes me so distressed. Thankfully Jacob, Megan, and Ashley were there to help me get through that night at the viewing. And when we finally met Jaxen's mother, she cried and hugged us all and told us how thankful she was for our help and support. As hard as it was for me to go to that viewing, I'm glad I did it. Because again I remembered that it wasn't about me. It was about helping other people who needed it. There were so many people we made cards for and visited when hard times hit. I loved being a rescue committee. I loved being the shoulder for someone to cry on. It made me feel so good. It gave me the purest feeling of joy. Something that a lot of people don't get to experience.

Now, I'm not trying to brag or anything. I mean, this is my personal blog. I just don't ever want to forget about this experience I had. I never want to forget the feelings I had because of this calling. I never want to forget why service is so important. I want to be able to look back on this and be so thankful for it. Because I am. I am so thankful that my Heavenly Father trusted me with something like that. I am forever changed because of it.
I absolutely love them.

Gnats

So this one time my family went on a trip to Yellowstone. It was right after my sister got married. Her and Shane came along with the Fab Five and we had a real good time :) Yellowstone is one of my favorite places to go camping. It is HUGE and there are tons of different things to see. But the animals are probably my favorite part! We get up super early and drive and drive and drive until we get to where the bears like to hang out. It's usually still a little dark and you have to search them out but when you find one it's so exciting! We stop off on the side of the road and run out to take pictures. This is definitely not a "safe" activity but it sure is fun! I love being the start of a bear jam ;)
My family and I have been to Yellowstone quite a few times. Every time is a new adventure and we always have so much fun! But this particular time stands out to me. I don't know if it's because my brother-in-law was there but it just seems to be different than all the other trips we've taken there. Maybe it's because of this beaut of a picture...

We were hiking around looking at different hot pots or something and were being eaten alive by gnats. They were awful, terrible creatures and were so obnoxious. They fly around your head and buzz in your ears. It's so annoying! Luckily we all had nifty jackets to protect us! So we walked around just like this for quite some time and Shane documented this moment. Aint that just special :)
I love my family and I love our camping trips. I've been so many amazing places over the years. I've seen some pretty incredible stuff!! It just proves to me that our Heavenly Father loves us so much that he wanted to make some parts of this earth extra special. These National Parks are not accidents of nature. They were created to be places of wonder and beauty. I'm so glad my parents have taught me and my siblings how important it is to appreciate them. I'm glad they are protected and preserved by the NPS so that future generations will be able to enjoy these spectacular sights. I mean can you imagine if someone decided to start building houses along the Grand Canyon? It would totally ruin it!
So today I am remembering all the nights I've spent sleeping in our trailer listening to the sounds of the wild right outside. I remember one day I woke up to 9 massive Elk right outside my window. I remember playing in all kinds of rivers and lakes. I remember being up so high in the mountains that I felt  I was on top of the world. I remember having a snowball fight with my brother on the side of a volcano in the middle of July. I remember campfires and smores. I remember being able to see stars. I remember hours and hours in the car with my brother and sisters. I remember classic rock music blaring as we drove. I remember sleeping bags and cold pillows. I remember singing and laughing and gift shops. I remember ranger shows. I remember animals, particularly the time we watched a fox and a grizzly bear chase each other around a meadow. I remember hiking and getting dirty. I remember picnics. (Like in Yosemite when my dad practically cut his finger off and we sat at the only table in the shade for hours while he was getting stitched up. People were so mad at us. We were just four dumb kids sitting around with no parents... hahaha) I remember staying up late and waking up early. Camping is the BEST. It's the time when you can just get away from it all and enjoy the  outdoors. :)
Happy "So this one time..." Sunday everyone!

In Loving Memory

I don't even know where to begin this post. I have so much to say.
Earlier this week one of the greatest men I have ever known passed away. I was at work ready to end my shift and leave for the day when my dear friend Elise came in. She was getting ready for her closing shift and we were just chatting as normal when she was like oh by the way... Brother Timothy died this morning.
I wasn't shocked by the news since he has been battling cancer for quite some time, but I was still sad. I was  glad I was done working for the day and could just go talk to my sister. He meant a lot to me and has really had an impact on my life these past 3 years.
Let me start from the beginning. Like, primary. The boys and girls my age in the Welby 3rd ward aren't exactly...friends. We've never ever gotten along super well and definitely don't hang out. We never sit together at activities and have separate sides of the room in our classes. When the Timothy's were called to be our teachers this all changed. Craig had this lovely idea of giving us a seating chart. He made us get to know others and sit with people we didn't know so that we would actually listen to our lessons. Also, for the first 15 minutes of every class we would go around the room and share one thing from the previous week. This gave us a chance to talk and get to know each other. Sometimes they would have us say one thing we learned about someone that we didn't know before. They unified us and made us feel more comfortable talking to each other. It reminds me a lot of the movie Freedom Writers. (Way to go Mr. Olpin. Something you taught me in my English class actually applies to my life) When people start to have a better understanding of the people around them, incredible things happen.
They helped us understand the scriptures and always gave us quality lessons. We studied the Old Testament,  New Testament, and The Book of Mormon with them. Craig always gave us a challenge to be better in our lives. He made us report back to him and follow up on the things we had been learning.
We had our own Sunday School Facebook group and had parties from time to time. We had lessons over Skype when Craig went out of town and Janet was still there to teach us. I mean who does that?! Most people just get a sub and forget about their class when they leave but not him. He made sure he could at least call and listen to our news of the week when he was gone. They really did genuinely care about us. Plus they ALWAYS gave us treats which was awesome. Even on Fast Sunday Janet would pass around the bag of assorted gum. I can't even tell you how many cinnamon rolls and choco tacos I ate before Sacrament Meeting. It was the best :)
When we found out he was sick it was hard for all of us. He still continued to come and teach us even when I know he felt like crap. He was the ultimate example of sacrifice and priorities. He always had a good attitude and made sure that we were being taken care of. I really appreciate all the words of wisdom he gave us. The last week he was able to come to our class he thanked us for all we'd done for him. He told us to keep our testimonies strong and to be nice to everyone. All I could think was how on earth could we have possibly done anything for you? You were the one who taught us and stayed with us until the very end. He never asked to be released and give up. I'm so very thankful for him and his wife. His children as well. That family rocks and I'm so glad that I have gotten to know them so well over the past few years.
Brother Timothy will always be someone I look up to. I miss him a lot but I know he's happy in heaven. And I will forever be thankful for the things he has taught me. :)

100 Years of Seminary

Last night there was a broadcast featuring President Boyd K. Packer celebrating the 100th year of seminary. How cool is that!? I didn't know it had been around that long...and I guess if I really think about it I can't imagine that it never existed. There was a video at the beginning where President Eyring talked about the very first seminary class. It was held in a tiny room with just a few students and a very faithful teacher. They went there every day to learn about the Gospel and make their lives better. We then found out that President Eyring's mother was in that very class in 1912. So cool! I'm very thankful that she participated in seminary and grew up to raise one of the leaders of our church.
Also in the video there were stories of youth who wake up very early and travel a long way to go to seminary. Their faith and dedication is incredible. I don't know if I could do that myself. I'm so blessed to have  chance to attend seminary DURING my school day. I love being able to spend just one period of my schedule in a seminary class. I wish I could take two classes and have it EVERY day. It's just that awesome.
President Packer talked about a lot of important things that I definitely needed to hear. He is so blunt. He doesn't try to hide behind the words and beat around the bush. I love how he is so confident in the things he says. He talked about the things us youth should and should not be doing. He said that we must be strong in fighting against Satan. Simply just stop doing things that let him control our lives. If you think you cannot repent and change, you are so far from right. You can ALWAYS change. It's never too late. Seminary is what can help us be stronger and fight this battle. Sure, he's an old man. He's been alive for a LONG time. People might think that his age causes him to forget what it's like to be a kid. And that he doesn't understand. But he DOES. His many years of experience in life have taught him what is most important for us to know. He speaks truth. I have so much confidence in his words. I think as I've gotten older I've stopped thinking of the commandments as "rules we have to follow" and started thinking of them as excellent words of advice from a loving Father in Heaven who KNOWS what is best. He doesn't tell us to dress a certain way because he's trying to control our lives. He tells us how to dress so that we can feel good about ourselves and be happy with who we are. That's just one of the many examples I could think of.
Seminary is one of the greatest blessings in my life. Especially serving on Seminary Council. When that calling was extended to me by Brother Parker, I felt so inadequate. "Surely, there has to be someone better. More popular. That knows the scriptures better. Who is more hard working and obedient than I am...." I felt like I wasn't good enough for it. But soon after my doubt I felt peace. Like this is what I was supposed to dedicate my senior year to. And it is. I've never been more thankful for a calling before. I am so humbled by it. Being around those 11 kids who I get to serve with is incredible. Megan is so nice to everyone ALL the time. Derek knows his scriptures like no one else. Kelsey is always on the lookout for people we can help. They're all just great. I sometimes feel like they help me more than I help them... but, I'm so thankful for it. I would be somewhere scary if it weren't for their great example and encouragement to be better. :)
I'm just really glad I have seminary in my life. Somewhere I can go and be myself. Say what I feel. I feel pretty lucky that I got to be a senior for the celebration. :)

Oh- and Copper Hills had the most decorated building in like...the world ;) hahaha
